Why Write About [BLANK]?

I’ve covered various topics over the past year of blogging – from global, humanitarian issues to the world of markets, crafting and life as a small business. Perhaps it was my own upbringing, but every time I choose to write about anything, I am faced with a question.

“Why write about [BLANK]?”

Perhaps it is the pessimistic and exhausted nature of so many people, including myself at times, that makes me wonder why. Why am I writing this? What is a single blog post changing? Should I even bother?

I have a handful of reasons for choosing to write a blog, and address topics that aren’t strictly business-related. I have reasons to write about my experiences with markets, small business and creation in general. And there is one explanation that overlaps the two.

“Why write about [BLANK]?”

“Why not?”

Why do we do anything if not for the love or passion we feel?

Many of the topics I write about come from a place of former-longing. I write about the things I wish I knew, the advice I wish I had, the information I once searched for and couldn’t find.

I’m a self-taught artist, out of necessity more than choice. I didn’t have the resources to be taught, so I figured it out solely on my own. I’m a small business that ran head-first into the dark, because it was all or nothing, a second chance I could never afford to pass up. I’m an experienced market stallholder that once scoured the internet in tears, unable to find answers to the questions I was seeking out.

I aim to shamelessly write about my experiences – good and bad – because it benefits a person that stands in the shoes I once wore.

No one deserves to be unseen; your flag deserves to be flown.
No one deserves to be unseen; your flag deserves to be flown.

I choose to write about the earth and it’s suffering because no one deserves to feel alone in this ongoing battle. I choose to bear my scars of domestic violence, because had I known then what I know now, perhaps I could have identified the abuse as something more than just ‘something I deserved’ sooner. I choose to out myself as a queer person, because no one should ever feel alone.

“Why write about [BLANK]?”

“Why not?”

We are on a floating rock, flying through the vastness of space that we will not understand in our lifetime.

Why shouldn’t I promote an event? Why shouldn’t I write about an experience? Why shouldn’t I advocate for the health and safety of minorities or fight for the planet we collectively call home?

I write for the same reason I create: it fills me with hope, love and a reason to be.
I write for the same reason I create: it fills me with hope, love and a reason to be.

Why can’t you do the same?

Start a blog. Write that book. Film your first video for a social media app or website. Stand up on stage. Send that email or letter. Make art. Volunteer your time or expertise.

Why shouldn’t we?

We know so much and so little. We build and destroy daily. We know love and hatred, peace and war, death and new beginnings. We are always learning and unlearning, consuming and evaluating, giving and taking in turn.

Our experiences should never be adjusted to fit into a box. Not because it is ‘too political’. Not because it is ‘too much’ or ‘not enough’. Not because ‘no one cares’.

Someone cares. Someone always does. Out of billions of people on the people on the planet, there is statistically one person who cares about what you have to say.

So why not write about [BLANK]?
